Mixing drywall mud and ceiling texture?

Is it ok to use a not-so heavy duty drill to mix drywall mud. I tried using a cordless drill and it used up all battery power in less than a minute. The only corded drill I have is a light duty drill that I use mostly for woodworking. Would using this drill ruin it?
Also, any tips on the mud to use for knockdown texture on the ceiling. Should I use the same stuff I used to tape the seams, buckets of all purpose (green top) already mixed mud? And how much water should I add to a bucket of this.
Any suggestions on what amp drill I should be looking at

Basically, you want the consistency of pancake batter.
Just thick enough so it sticks to a wall without running.
Dab some on your finger and flick it on a piece of scrap to test it.
As for your drill,
I’ve burned up 3 Makita cordless drills.
Then I got smart and got a 18 volt Dewalt.
Never had a problem since.

You just have to thin it up.
No, you do not want to use a lightweight drill for mixing compound. You will wear out the motor very quickly – I’ve done it! You can get away with mixing a very small amount at a time, as that doesn’t put too much pressure on the drill. But if you’re going to do a lot of mixing, you’re better off getting something specific for that.
As for the ceiling texture, there is a different compound for that. It is a harder compound than the typical one used for taping drywall. Lowes, or Homedepot will have this – just ask.

ok use the best drill you have … and use the blue bucket mud… it a lot lighter, best for texture !!! green is much heavy-er !!
it should look like a milk shake, when mixed up, you really need two people to texture, one to mix , and keep mixing , one to apply.. much easy er that way…
the ave room uses around 2 buckets of mud for a ceiling …
spray it on. with your machine . and wait say 12 Min’s then use
your big trowel. to knock it down at a 45degree angle…
if your mud slides, its still to wet , so watch how much water you use. or wait a little longer, ive waited nearly 30 Min’s then used the trowel
Many people might find it too tedious, but I’ve mixed 5 gallon buckets full of mud with a 2 x 2 stick. It does take a few minutes, and do it with a "figure 8" pattern.
Also, I’ve used regular drywall mud for texture lots of times, and it worked just fine. Of course, you have to dilute it a little, and that’s pretty much a matter of practice. Add water just a bit at a time until you like how it acts; that’s really all there is to it. I’ve found as long as you do the whole house the same way nobody else ever notices anyway.
